June Holidays: What I Learned (Again) About Study Habits and Holidays

It’s June. The school holidays are here.

This year feels different—our first June holidays where the kids are still in school, having transitioned from kindergarten to childcare. But that didn’t stop us from taking a long family break. Three hectic weeks of travel later, we’re back. Emma only did 1 out of 3 weeks of homework, but we still count it a win.

We got back on the horse this Monday (it’s Friday now). Emma read well, handled most of her division with ease, though subtraction was a little shaky. But here’s what really matters: she was consistent, not resistant. She’s still learning. She’s preparing for Primary 1—not perfectly, but persistently.

A few reflections: 1. Pre-kids Julian would’ve stuck to the schedule.

But now, as a dad, I’ve realised how important it is to let family holidays be family holidays. We snuck in some math drills before screen time and used little habits to keep learning alive—without killing the joy. 2. Quick Tip: Unlock Screen Time with a Math Drill

After a full day of sightseeing and shopping, my wife and I were tired. Instead of letting Emma dive straight into screen time, we added a simple condition: “One math drill before the iPad.” It worked like a charm. Practice continued, without a fight. 3. Evening Lessons Still Matter (Even If You’re Tired)

Those post-dinner lessons you drag yourself to do? Worth it. I’ve seen kids regress sharply after skipping work for a few weeks—usually takes two full weeks to rebuild the foundation. But with Emma, even though she did just 10% of her normal work, she didn’t regress much. The key? Consistent (even if minimal) daily habit. We’re heading to Japan next for 12 days. Let’s see what new things Emma will teach me this time.
